The latest Cobb’s Construction Sunshine Coast beach house
is awe inspiring, thorough, detailed, unique.
The name Cobb’s Constructions conjours up images of a Sunshine Coast beach house that is modern, minimal, and somewhat whimsical. Additionally there is the confidence of perfection in finish that all Cobb’s Construction homes provide. Even with this expectation.
Starting with a Marcus Beach address, this five bedroom home is a sculptural masterpiece. Somewhere in the scope of this project architecture meets art, building lines jump off the page and take on a vibrancy of their own. This home is best described as an experience. Art to live. There are a myriad of finishes: rammed earth, off form concrete, polished concrete, recycled timber from a Melbourne pier, a Sydney Wool Store and a Western Australian bridge. Imported green slate resides alongside Australian Blackbutt, limestone, bronze, plywood, pierced metal and beech. Linear elements feature strongly in different zones; casual horizontals in private, relaxed rooms, and distinct verticals in the action oriented work and play spaces. Occasionally a carefully placed, random element is pierced or punctured in an amoebic style, for contrast, for interest, to relate the hard lines of the protective shell that is the dwelling to the softness that is the human body within. Such complex visual discourse can only be successful when the builder works in sympathy with the architectural intention, careful planning is wasted without careful execution. This home boasts an excellent finish quality, as has come to be expected from Cobb’s Constructions.
The rooms are pristine, with clean lines and a lack of clutter that can only be achieved when careful planning creates generous storage spaces. Minimalism allows direct access to the plethora of finish textures. Colours are neutral or subdued, supporting not overwhelming the surface. Randomly a colour rings out to excite, in shocking pink, or chartreuse. Pattern is introduced through texture, except when an oversized novelty pattern is employed to surprise and enliven.
Cobb’s Constructions must be congratulated on attempting and so successfully completing such a monumental task. Technique after technique has had to be learnt to complete the artistic requirements of this residence, with trades people and resources sourced from around Australia and the world. From the moment the drawings crossed John Cobb’s desk he was hooked, challenged, engaged. The project presented many challenges, and required extensive planning and problem solving. John Cobb and his trades people approach this kind of task with enthusiasm, skill and commitment.
Regardless of the greatness of a design, until it crosses path with a great builder only images exist, pictures from an imagination. It takes the hands of the builder for images to become part of everyone’s reality. This project is individual, powerful, opinionated and decisive. It won’t be to everyone’s liking, but we can all appreciate quality when we come across it, regardless of the specifics of style.
